HS05 - Competitors and Performance

The inaugural Hove Superstars was competed on a balmy summer's day down in Hove.  A full day's events were capped off with kayaking down on the seafront and then a big bag of chips and a soggy old cod.  Top bombing!   Then after a quick shower we were back on town for the evenings' events.

Christian Faires

Last year's winner.  A strong middle distance runner in his youth, and is now benefiting from those years of training.  In HS05, Faires featured strongly in every event, bar the kayaking (DNF).  Fortunately for him the championship was already in the bag with an event to spare.  We'll be expecting more of the same this year.

Rob Norris

Coming off the back of a good football season with the mighty Storrington FC, Roberto was impressive in taking the football challenge, and explosive in the first 50m of the 100m sprint.  His efforts on the bike hill climb were woeful.  A surprise winner in the golf got this lad off to a flier, and he finished strongly in the kayaking to cement his podium finish.

James Cox

The Timotei boy was another good sportsmen, a footballing pedigree assisting him in many events.  Apparently if the scoring had been  done differently, Coxy may well won the title.  However, c'est la vie.  And Coxy has had another year of sawing trees and axe wielding to back up his title challenge this year.

Jim 'Churchill' Buckett

Another strong contender last year.  Big Jim finished comfortably in the top 5 in most events and ended up 2nd overall.  An all rounder through and through.  He even batted on until 3am at Funky Buddha bar.....more of the same this year please jimbo.

Peter Knott

Pete 'County Level' Knott was always going to compete in every event.  Large thighs ensured victory in the 100m.  With the swimming event being added this year, and Pete's championship form in the Bucks under 14 league, he should be an even stronger contender in 2006.

Alex Millward

High fitness levels ensured a solid display from Alex.  Particularly impressive in the squat thrusts (top score).  A rowing background will ensure Alex is up there again in 2006.  This lad is also doing some form of sprint training with Faires.......all in the name of Hove Superstars.

Gez Ludlow

This youngster was full of fitness.  Another allrounder who featured in most events.  Rowing pedigree seems to be a good foundation for superstars' competitiveness.

Paul Davies

Davies' bid for the title vanished early doors when he failed to compete in the football - one of his 'stronger' events.  And then failed to win the golf which was his only hope.  Wooden Spoon avoidance will be his motivation.  Mid table mediocrity would be a luxury.

Damon Turner

Damo: Special mention for the 'Jonny 2 Chests' as he was the only person who completed all his dips correctly, and he still won.

Unless we have some new big dippers this year, Damo WILL win this event again!

Steve McGuigan

A long and distinguished athletics career put Stevo up as one of the early favourites.  However, a hamstring injury saw him impeded, and potential was not fulfilled.  2nd in the 800m was a bitter pill to swallow.

Gordon Monaghan

Gordo has a long history of sporting achievements....unfortunately superstars has not yet become one of them.....However, word around Northern athletic tracks is that he may well be back in the hunt.

Dominic Faires

Faires Junior.  An endurance athlete, good hill climber, bad kayaker.  Unfortunately Dom can't make this year's event, so his performances in events such as golf will be sadly missed.
